April Film Club: The Strangers

This month it is our first horror movie club pick. The Strangers film series.

The series is all about a group of masked intruders who terrorize victims when they least expect it. The films started back in 2008 and have been developed over the years. These psychological horror films were revamped and a new story started. Overall there are three films within this new collection. In Chapter One a couple Maya and Ryan become trapped in a remote cabin after their car breaks down. Whilst celebrating their anniversary they are brutally attacked. In Chapter Two Maya carries on enduring frights as she becomes trapped in hospital from previously being stabbed. Then in Chapter Three revenge is taken by Maya as she uncovers secrets whilst in survival mode.

This film had constant jump scares and you were wondering what was going to happen next. As someone who has a fear of masks, this was definitely one that had myself on edge. The setting was in an isolated town in all three films which added to the suspense. From a cabin, to a hospital and then the woods it may have moved on but cheering on the survivor became more tense. The series is known for its tension building and it is safe to say it hit the mark in all three.

In the original films you were always left in the dark, with no reasoning as to why the killers take out their murders. With no connections either to their victims it led it to your own imagination to decide why. What was good about this series is that you finally got an actual story along with the killers. Not just from where the victims came from but the killers themself. This is something I have waited for a long time.

The three killers: Scarecrow, Dollface, and Pin-Up Girl have an iconic look to them. With them wearing masks it brought the excitement of not knowing who they were .Throughout the series you were trying to guess and figure out if they were someone who might be closer to Maya than you think.

The only negative I could come to, would be that some horror fans may not like how realistic it is, there were times where you thought that it could have been different and wouldn't have happened. Essentially that is why this is enjoyable. It gives you the classic American horror we all crave from time to time.

Overall I would rate is 4 out of 5.
