Are We the Selfish Generation - The Growing Debate Over Boundaries

When things get a bit too much our instant reaction for some of us is to stop. To go home, not touch our phone, do a bit of selfcare and disappear. Having social media and technology makes being on our own harder. Because we are so accessible all because of our phones. Everyone has a phone and everyone uses it more than anything else. We are at everyone's beckon call.

From this we have our walls up when we have reached our limit or want some space. We start to lie, “I barely go on my phone”. “I'm not at home.” We have many excuses. As much as people think as a younger generation we like to people please, there is another half that don’t. You start to wonder if this is selfish. Are we a selfish generation?

In some aspects yes. We can’t not communicate and expect people to be around whenever we need them and forget. There are times where others need us too, despite us struggling. Having no communication with those that are close to you is not a boundary if it has not always been like that and it is suddenly cut off. It isn't normal to disappear off the face of the earth when things get tough. First as humans we need other people and it is so important to reach out. And second, it isn't healthy in our relationships with ourselves or others. It becomes an excuse to back off and not be present.

On the other hand, no. When putting up boundaries for some it is healthy and a need. When everyone is doing it, it starts to look like it is not anymore. Some people don't have a cut off or a stop button and need it more than ever. There are lots of complex situations where no and a cut off is needed just for their own mental well being. It can take a toll on them. It protects your peace and if disappearing with healthy communication to ones close to us, then so be it.
