Music for When You Have the Whole Day to Yourself

There’s a certain kind of confidence that comes with having the day to yourself- not loud or performative, just a quiet sense that you can move exactly how you want to. I find that on days like this, the music I listen to reinforces this feeling, as well as protecting me from any loneliness creeping in or a slight loss of direction.

Music becomes less of a backdrop and more of a subtle soundtrack- something that sharpens the edges of ordinary moments and puts me at the centre of my own life. The albums I keep coming back to are from Clairo, Amy Winehouse, Sade, Cocteau Twins, and The Marías; these are artists I can rely on to just boost that sense of self-assurance, perfect for those in-between hours where you get to exist with a little more purpose.

Below are the albums I would handpick if you needed a reminder to place yourself right at the centre of your own life, and take your 24 hours at whatever pace suits you!

“Lioness: Hidden Treasures”- Amy Winehouse

Album song pick: Track 5, “Like Smoke”

Amy Winehouse’s Lioness: Hidden Treasures feels effortlessly cool - the kind of album you put on without overthinking, and suddenly everything you’re doing feels a little more intentional. There’s a looseness to it, a mix of demos and covers that somehow makes it feel even more personal. This is the perfect getting ready album (speaking from experience); she balances vulnerability with a kind of offhand confidence that lets you start your day feeling self-assured. She also perfectly blends soul, jazz, and stripped-back production in the demos which give the whole 45 minutes a gorgeously unpolished edge.

“Immunity”- Clairo

Album song pick: Track 6, “Softly”

Immunity kind of has an understated confidence. Clairo’s confident lyricism is presented more softly and with a gentle tone, which I think makes it feel more reassuring than overwhelming. She captures those quiet, in-your-head moments in a way that feels calm rather than overwhelming. It’s the kind of album that makes solo time feel intentional and like you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.

As her debut album, it includes a combination of lo-fi-style pop, and soft-rock and she ranges from breezy and upbeat tracks to deep ballads. I think my favourite part of this album is the use of children’s choirs on several tracks; it makes for a beautiful, wholesome listen.

“Submarine”- The Marías

Album song pick: Track 7, “Paranoia”

Submarine is a silky and self-contained album, combining both Spanish and English lyrics to create a chic blend and creating a sense of calm detachment that feels almost protective. To me, it feels like moving through your day in your own little world, maybe people watching or quietly observing everything around you.

The album was written after a short break for the band, and explores the themes of self-discovery, and heartbreak, following the breakup of lead singer María Zardoya and drummer/producer Josh Conway.

“Heaven or Las Vegas”- Cocteau Twins

Album song pick: Track 3, “Iceblink Luck”

Cocteau Twins' 1990 masterpiece, Heaven or Las Vegas, is widely considered the pinnacle of dream pop, blended with ethereal soundscapes. I find this album literally puts a spring in my step. You can zone out while listening or hone right in on tracks such as “Iceblink Luck” that act like an explosion of colour in your ear.

The album cover alone is enough to put me in a good mood, and along with Elizabeth Fraser’s vocals, I really do feel like I can take on the day.

“THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE.”- RAYE

Album song pick: Track 10, “Goodbye Henry. (feat. Al Green)”

Recent release This Music May Contains Hope, is Raye’s second album and has already received an impressive reception. Rolling Stone UK describes it as an exciting, life-affirming listen that reminds you it’s never too late to turn things around, and I couldn’t agree more.

Raye’s music has always struck me as powerful and confrontational in the best way; she doesn’t shy away from big feelings, but embraces them to deliver some truly stunning ballads. It almost feels cinematic as a whole album, and you can become absorbed in her raw honesty in a full listen-through.

Track 10 brings in Al Green for the silky soul ballad ‘Goodbye Henry’, my personal favourite on the album. It glides in with a warm, almost vintage feel, but underneath there’s a quiet sense of closure: like letting go of a version of your life you once imagined. It’s reflective without being heavy, the kind of song that makes you pause for a moment, then keep moving.

Beyond these albums, there are a few individual songs I always come back to—uplifting, energising tracks that keep your spirits high and let you move through the day with a quiet sense of confidence and assurance:

  • “Carmen” - Olivia Dean

  • “Slow Dance”- Clairo

  • “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)”- Natalie Cole

  • “Kiss Me”- Sixpence None The Richer

  • “Let’s Stay Together”- Al Green

  • “Rhiannon”- Fleetwood Mac

  • “Ex-Factor”- Ms.Lauryn Hill

  • “Your Love Is King” - Sade

  • “Carry On” - Norah Jones

  • “Life Goes On”- The Sundays
