New Year, No Us

You have woken up next to someone who you swore you either wouldn’t hang out with or be romantically involved with. Old habits of people pleasing and longing for acceptance creep up again. You can't take anymore heartbreak or overthinking anymore. Which leads to deciding the new year, no us.

Every year we say the same old thing: “New year, new me!” We always think about how we can be better and what we can gain in the next year. What we should leave in the past, not so much.

Going back to people we know aren’t good for us whether it be friends or lovers is degrading. Over time it becomes tiring and lots of you telling yourself "I told you so, I knew this would happen". But it feels so good to maybe do the things we shouldn't or just for the pure comfort of knowing how this is going to go.

No year, no us is a representation of the two opposites of New Year as a positive but reminds us of the negative being in the past. Some people don't like to look back but we have to learn how better our time is being spent now we have diminished anything that is no good for us.

Leaving someone in the past is not necessarily something we normally want to do, especially if we care about them still. But it’s something brave to do. It's something to tell yourself in the years to come to not go back to old patterns, to be better and find better out there. There is always another lover waiting to cherish your love and friends that value you for who you are.

It's a great sense of optimism that you can be on your own, you can get through this and you don’t need them for another year. Even if you thought you never could.
