What Vlogmas Taught Me

Vlogmas is a part of Christmas I always look forward to every year and I don't think it would be the same without it since growing up with it. Living in a working class world, getting in from your nine to five there is nothing better than putting your favourite Youtuber on and sharing the same excitement, Christmas. While watching this year it made me look at Youtube and Christmas differently, sat watching with others chatting away at what was on the screen it made me realise there is something to learn from vlogmas.
At Christmas time everyone looks for perfection. the tree with their baubles in the right place, cooking going to plan and getting "the best" presents. But vlogmas depicts this type of perfection differently for everyone. Vlogging everyday you can't look or be perfect. Everyday life isn't perfect it is chaotic and unpredictable and we all know that so why would a camera change this? Yes the angles can make things look better but it is meant to be raw and silly all the way.
Another thing is tradition. Seeing people's routines and ride or die plans they do every year is so special. Would you believe a lot of them we do too. Some can be different which links in with the point above which is perfection can never be reached if all Christmases look different. I found it was inspiring to decide what you might want to do next year too.
A no brainer at Christmas is the importance of family. we all should be grateful to be surrounded by family or a person at Christmas. As much it is a happy time of year it can be a very sad or lonely time of year for some, to bare in mind. Those grandparents or elderly people in our life make it so important to be present as every year goes by. Family is important to a lot of people and Christmas is especially a time regardless of history or blips throughout the year, to push feelings aside and celebrate together.
A different one to the rest is that I learnt christmassy experiences aren't always what they seem. Especially the expensive ones. Don't get me wrong I love a Christmas light show but on reflection families and people pay so much for such little festivity. While watching it was fun to weigh up if that was worth the money and finding about all the nice or free events too nearby that celebrate Christmas just as well.
One that I know can be hard for a lot of people, myself included, is eating without guilt especially at Christmas. It's a time where most of us over indulge and as we should. Most women are on a constant cycle of restricting, cant's, and wont's and Christmas is a time for that attitude to go for a while. If December can be an excuse to be free to eat however, let's take it. Within the vlogs there are advent calendars, puddings and picky bits always on show. Families coming over for a roast or snacks while watching films and playing games. They all amount to special memories. Don't let food take that away from you.
Theres always someone who doesnt enjoy christmas as much as others for their own reasons. Which is why doing those festive things can make Christmas feel a little better. I have never been one to put myself out there and do lots of festive things before, but this year was different. Seeing others do nice things with friends, in couples or families inspires you to figure out what Christmas plans you want to do. As someone who doesn't like to drink a lot, this time of year can feel difficult so I found things that I enjoyed and vlogmas helped with this.
Things I did:
Christmas markets
Made gingerbread house
Put my decorations up early
Christmas tree farm
Christmas quiz
Light show
That's everything that stood out to me over the festive season with all the help of some comfort youtubers. I hope you enjoyed Christmas no matter how it looked or felt.
Love,
Luna x
