This month we have a sequel. Not just any. A sequel that makes the hairs on your arm stand up. Leaving you constantly thinking about what is to come next. Lisa Jewell's psychological thriller stories came together, finally finished.
Firstly we will start off with The Family Upstairs.
A stranded baby, Libby Jones finally finds out where she came from and it isn't necessarily how she expected it to be. She soon learns that she has inherited an abandoned mansion in London alongside lots of secrets. Libby digs her way through to find out who her real parents are and what happened leading up to birth.
This book kickstarted the story off and did it kick start! This book was everything I wanted and more it had the twists and turns that I love. First, I enjoyed how it moved back and forth to the past and future because you could compare the reality of what it has led up to the story, making you try to predict what happened. The characters all balanced each other out and made a statement to each of their relationships that lead up to the ending. I don't think I could choose who was my favourite character as they are all so different and each have their own story. I liked how there was still a happy ending but also a cliffhanger. Hinting at another book. Sometimes when there is a sequel it can draw the story out longer than it needs to. But Jewell's clever storylines running through the first book made it all the more easier to get to know the character's even more.
The second book The Family Remains leads us to delve deeper into the lives of Libby's new family and history of her home. After a crime investigation is started everything becomes rocky looking into their perfect lives. Affairs and relationships become involved and even more murders. Their past haunts them and will come back to make things harder to make a fresh start altogether.
I really enjoyed this book and if I had to choose between the two I would have chosen this one. But you definitely could not have had the second without the first. I liked how you felt you knew the characters so well and their backgrounds that it worked together. You could just fall back into the story again. This book allowed you to delve deeper into more secrets and revelations which at some points gave me goosebumps. There were more stories that strayed away from Libby's background and onto other characters which was what made it more exciting.
If you are someone who is a die hard mystery/thriller lover this is a must read!
