Summer I turned Pretty

WARNING SPOILERS

The famous American love triangle is back for summer on Amazon Prime from July 14.

Summer I Turned Pretty is a coming of age romance story going through the twists and turns as main character Belly, Lola Tung deals with her first love and heartbreaks between two brothers.

Producer Marty Scott created this drama back in 2022 where during season one The Fisher Family arrive at their summer house at Cousins with The Conklin family.

The Conklin family consists of Belly, her brother Steven, Sean Kaufman and her mother Laurel, Jackie Chung.

The Fisher family includes the oldest brother Conrad, Christopher Briney and his younger brother Jeremiah, Gavin Casalegno and their mother Susannah, Rachel Blanchard.

After knowing each other for years bonds build and crushes overtake.

The two mothers have a strong friendship that is shown throughout.

The brothers try to date others but love pulls them back and forth to Belly leaving her in a love triangle.

Meanwhile Steven struggles to figure out who his true love is, being Belly's best friend Taylor, Rain Spencer or who he has met over summer.

Belly doesn't want things to change but it becomes apparent it's too late leaving Jeremiah heartbroken as she ends the season in love with Conrad.

The show leaves us with a devastating turn when Susannah becomes ill and sadly passes away, leaving everyone with two doses of heartache.

Season two took a different angle at the start as it made you question what was happening and where certain characters were and what had happened since last summer.

After losing Susannah there was a big shift within all their lives.

Everything had changed with none of the families speaking, they had all moved away and none were visiting Cousins like they traditionally did every year.

It gave a realistic approach to grief and reflected it well through the struggles and dramatic changes, no matter how hard people try to stop them from happening, which I liked.

This new normal involved Belly and Conrad no longer being together and Belly and Jeremiah not best friends anymore.

As well, Belly and Steven's relationship with their mother slowly starts to fade and become disconnected due to the loss of her best friend, Susannah.

Throughout, the story unfolds through flashbacks explaining key changes and moments that have detrimental effects towards the future, which is now the present that we watch.

New characters arise involving the brothers Auntie Julia, Kyra Sedgwick and their Cousin Skye, Elsie Fisher.

These characters have a big impact on the story line as they break the news to both families of selling the summer house at Cousins.

This created an uproar and shows the bitter side to grief from the outer circle.

Through this tragedy it built back bonds that were lost since summer both in friendships and love.

After the news it brought Steven closer to Taylor leading them together again.

Belly rekindles with both brothers despite the arguments and tears and starts to catch feelings just like last summer,

Leaving Belly with the ultimate decision of finally choosing Jeremiah over Conrad.

With the loss of her best friend Laurel finds herself and fixes her relationships with her children including Susannah's.

As the season goes on what was once a broken family, they use their fire to carry on traditions that Susannah once created.

I did enjoy the second season for completely different reasons to the first.

I expected it to be the cheesy love story I originally signed up to.

It's hard to compare the two to each other as they had many different aspects to them even though the style was the same.

The points of the story were far apart.

The romance was still there but it didn't flood through like the first season which I liked because it made it more realistic.

It became a personal journey through them all growing up and reflected them individually instead of all merging together as one person.

They all had their own stories dealing with the ups and downs of the loss of Susannah.

I did think it was predictable when the love triangle was involved where you were tossed from one brother to another, which became tedious after a while as it felt long winded.

Throughout you were constantly picking sides and routing for either Conrad or Jeremiah.

One thing I loved the most about this show was the soundtrack as it was very fitting and suited their audience well with modern music from Taylor Swift to Gorillaz.

This made it fit with their audience of young adults.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the unique angle to The Summer I Turned Pretty that I didn't expect.
