The Cover Trap: How Appearances Mislead Us

Hello, my beautiful besties,

Quote of the day: “Own your own story, write it how you wish.”

We are in control of our life, we are in charge of our own story, and we write it how we see fit

so write your story how you want it to be.

So, besties? This week is our favourite book week! I went back and forth about what today was going to be, and I decided something short but with meaning this week, so this week we are discussing judging a book by its cover.

Every reader does the same thing even if we do not admit it, we pick up a book and if we do

not like the cover we put it down, no reading of the blurb, no opening, just down. Why?

I am an avid reader; I am also a writer and as a writer I would hate if someone did not read it

due to the cover, but as a reader I am very guilty of going into a bookstore, picking up a book

not liking the cover so putting it down. Certain covers just speak to me, I do not know why,

but some just you see them and you are like “yes this is my next read” and some you see and are like “I do not think I will like this one” but does doing this give books and authors justice? I do not think so.

So why do we do it? I can only speak for myself, but I do it because the covers are the first

thing we see, for me if it is too busy, too colourful, too much, then I feel like the book will be

overwhelming or too much, but at the same time if the cover is too simple, too dark, too

I don't know, I feel like the book will be not boring but a little slow.

I also am not a fan of photo covers, by that I mean with people on the cover, I like more I do

not want to say basic, but the type of covers that have what represents the books without

people so if it’s a dark romance about mafia, instead of people I would want maybe a snack

and a rose outline, with a darkish back ground, they are the covers I pick up, design covers

not realistic people covers.

Now everyone is different, so what everyone looks for in a cover is different. I did try to

convince myself for a while that I should read the blurb of the books before completely

making up my mind on the book, but I did not end up going through with it, I ended up

picking up books looking at the cover and then choosing whether to purchase or to put them

down.

So, I want to set all of us readers a mission, the next time you go to a bookstore buy a book

completely based on the blurb, ignore the cover, just the blurb.

The saying “never judge a book by its cover” most people take it literal, do not judge

someone based on looks, tattoos, hair style, weight, etc. But it should relate to everything, do not judge food off the look some of the worst looking food is often the best tasting, do not

judge a person simply based on their looks, and do not judge a book based on its cover.

Everyone deserves a chance, everything deserves a chance, every book deserves a chance.

And that book you put down might have been the best book you have ever read. So, pick up

that book with the odd cover, read the blurb, buy it, try it, do not judge a book by its cover.

Love,

Your autistic bestie.

Book of the week: I will not lie everyone I am in a little bit of a reading slump so there is not

a book of the week this week, I am highly sorry! If you have any tips on how to get out of the

reading slump, PLEASE tell me!
