Book Review: Heart the Lover

Lily Kings, Heart the Lover has been taking over my feed and every single bookshop I have entered has been showcased as a masterpiece. Only one way to find out is to have a read!

Heart the Lover is split into two: the past and present. Starting with the narrator known as ‘she’ is a student at college and becomes enthralled into the world of Sam and Yash. With academic splendor and card games, all of them become intertwined with each other. Even leading two of them to turn friendship into first love. Many decades later she is a writer, with a family until a certain someone comes back into her present. Is her past going to come crashing down? 

Overall I did enjoy this book as a contemporary fiction story. It had all the aspects that make contemporary fiction so special to me and personally some of my favorites to read. It is like a big hug. But there were a few things missing. Onto the good first which is the meaning of this story. Which to myself was: love hard as you never know when your time is up. This is a sad love story and I want you to be aware of this but it is a beautiful one. With conflicting feelings that delve deep when it comes to love and what the best way to treat old love runs throughout. 

The importance of friendship and how this was shown throughout was something I could only relate to. The bond of making friends at university and how it is a whole different type of friendship is a perfect representation. And how it changes to the present after so many decades and what this all means.  

For those who struggle reading larger books this is less than 250 pages so for those avid readers then you could do this in one sitting or for those who struggle to knuckle in, you can happily delve in whenever.

The one thing that threw me off this book was the ending. It felt so abrupt and I was left with so many questions. I felt you got to know the main character and went through this growth with her to just end at a wall. So many storyline pointers were happening along with the main storyline that I am now sitting wondering what happened to this/that. I felt it could have carried on a few more chapters, nothing majorly long but enough to tie those knots all us readers may have needed to gain some closure within this love story. It was so impactful to just end. 

Overall I would rate this 4 stars.
