Farage vs Binface

Many of you may have seen that Nigel Farage of the Reform Party has stepped down as the MP of his constituency in Clacton. This has forced a by-election where the only two major candidates are Nigel Farage (again) and Count Binface, a sort of comedic figure that has appeared in many elections in the past.

Now, why has Farage stepped down only to run again? He has recently been in the headlines over a financial scam, where The Guardian discovered a £5 million ‘gift’ from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne, as well as accusations that he has taken undeclared funding for his staffing, security and housing from George Cottrell, a convicted criminal.

While he has stepped down, all investigations into these allegations have been put on hold, though Farage claims none of the donations needed to be declared. Farage has claimed that his stepping down and running again will give the people of Clacton a chance to show they actually want him as MP, but this may have backfired.

The other parties have decided to simply boycott his stand, refusing to run a candidate against him. A spokesperson for the Labour Party has said that they will not "indulge" the Reform UK leader by standing a candidate "in this circus". The leader of the Conservative party dismissed the by-election as another gimmick by Farage, and that he is using this whole situation to distract from his allegations.

So, who is his one running opponent, Count Binface?

Count Binface, whose real name is Jon Harvey, is a comedy writer and performer who has previously helped produce shows like The Thick of It, Have I Got News For You, Time Trumpet and others. The Count Binface (satirical) political party states that he is an intergalactic space warrior.

He first stood for election in 2019 against Boris Johnson. “Count Binface's political platform is a mix of absurd, humorous proposals alongside more serious, albeit still tongue-in-cheek, suggestions for policy reform.” - from isidewith.com.

So why is this so embarrassing for Farage? Not only do his fellow politicians think that this whole by-election is nothing but a failed attempt at a corruption cover-up, but he may now have to stand in political debates with a comedian who wears a bin on his head and claims to be from space.

Not only this, but when Farage inevitably wins the by-election, the investigations into him will immediately resume. All this has done is simply buy him some time while simultaneously ruining his reputation in the face of the public.

Hopefully, this ridiculous stunt will wake people up to the joke that is the Reform Party and help them make better decisions in future elections.
