July Film Club: Speak No Evil

This month's decision for the film club is: Speak No Evil. this is for the horror/thriller girlies for sure.

The story follows an american family who whilst on vacation they befriend a couple. After accepting their invite to join them in their British farmhouse it all starts to devolve into a nightmare as their hosts/friends aren't who they thought they were. 

This film does come with a trigger warning so make sure to check to cause no harm. 

This is a film that has popped up many times and always was intrigued by this story. With James McAvoy as one of the main characters it definitely drew me in as his role in Split was brilliant. Another recommendation there, very creepy please be warned. His character was very up and down. You were led to believe he was a polite and generous host and friend. There were instances where he would switch up and make you feel unease which only added to the build up to the big secret they held as a couple catering for this family. 

The secret is the part that made this film for me. I have watched many things that are similar but this took an unexpected and nasty turn. You thought of the typical narratives but never expected something as twisted as this. 

The setting on this idyllic farmhouse was fun and cosy to watch. It added even more creepiness to the scenes. With the escalating discomfort from the couple and the farmhouse intertwined it created this hopeless ending which you only wanted to diminish.

When it came to the ending it felt at times it got a little daft. By that description it felt it went along too long with back and forth fighting back and at times unrealistic. But it didn't make you wander off and not be interested. 

Overall I would rate this 4 stars, it was refreshing and I definitely would choose this as a classic horror movie night for those who need it.
