When Gender Becomes Part of the Story

Dear Diary,
What an exciting weekend! It was so nice to be surrounded by all the love and support from our friends and family. I know the baby will be so unconditionally loved and it makes my mama heart feel a bit more at ease as we get ready to welcome our baby to the world.
If you haven’t already guessed it from last week’s entry, we are having a beautiful baby… boy!
My husband and I were so over the moon when we found out. It’s finally starting to feel real. Being able to talk about names, picturing how our little family of three will be spending the holidays, what sports we want to start him in.
Of course, we are just praying for a healthy baby above all else, but I know my husband is so excited to have a mini-me. I’ve also always pictured my perfect little family with an older son (and perhaps a younger daughter?!).
The gender reveal went as smoothly as I could have hoped for. Don’t get me wrong, it was hours and hours of baking, cooking, cleaning and stressing leading up to the day. But once everything was plated and the party room was finally ready, it all fell into place quite nicely. Most of our guests showed up (and on time!) and everyone stuck to the theme of wearing either blue or pink. Both of our families were so excited for us. Our friends were hyped to have a little baby
running around soon!
For the big reveal, I asked everyone to grab either a pink or blue cupcake. I explained how the icing inside the cupcake would be either blue for boys or pink for girls. My heart was pounding, this is the first time I’ve ever baked my own cupcakes with filling so I was just praying you could actually see the icing inside when you bite into it. We counted down and thankfully everyone could see the bright blue frosting!!! My mom cried with so much joy. Our friends were so excited.
My brother was definitely excited, since he was always the only boy in our generation of kids.
Seeing how happy everyone was made me so excited to be welcoming our son to this world. Despite all the other anxiety, I could rest assured that everyone would love him no matter what.
The rest of the evening went well, everyone partied, drank, ate and enjoyed themselves. We told stories of when we were young, how we can’t believe we’re old enough to have our own kids now. I also asked everyone to take a polaroid selfie and stick their predictions and wishes into a scrapbook for us to give to our baby boy when he’s older. It was so sweet reading all their messages, their wishes and their predictions.
We are almost done the third trimester! Time is flying by and we can’t wait to meet
you sweet baby boy!
B.
